Methodology
The purpose of DIVA (Data Interpolating Variational Analysis) software is to determine the values of a given field on a regular grid, knowing the value of this field at discrete data points. This is known as the gridding problem.
Diva is based on the Variational Inverse Method (VIM) which was initially designed for climatology [Brasseur et al. (1996)]. This method was further adapted by the GHER and used for various oceanographic studies (see the DIVA publication list).
The problem is solved with the help of a finite element mesh. An error field is also provided by the software, allowing the user to know where the analysis is valuable.
Diva is a free software with GNU GPL (General Public License) and can be found on the wiki page of DIVA.
