We present here a few topics for an internship ("stage" in the French cursus). The students would spend some time in our group working on a practical problem encountered in ocean sciences and the modelling of ocean currents, density fields etc.
The topics mentioned here can be undertaken in either the first or second quadrimester of an academic year.
Regional statistics using ARGO floats
For a specific region of the world ocean, the student will have to retrieve ARGO float data and provide statitics such as average vertical profiles and its variance for the definition of quality controls of ocean data. The student will also have to analyse and describe the hydrological features encountered during his study. This work will involve data retrieval and data transformation using Ocean Data View, which requires to be at easy with computers and simple statistics.
Sea Surface Temperature analyses
For a specific region of the world ocean, the student will have to retrieve AVHRR satellite data. The student will then provide average values of Sea Surface Temperature field paying attention to the presence of clouds. Once the fields created, the student will analyse the seasonal and interannual variability. This work will involve data retrieval and data transformation using [Matlab/Octave], which requires to be at easy with computers, programming and simple statistics.
A mixed layer model GOTM will be used to simulate the seasonal evolution of a thermocline in a selected location (Papa station, Black Sea, Dyfamed station, Calvi bay ...). The student will have to retrieve adequate atmospheric data and information on the hydrography of the site. Then the simulation will be subjected to sensitivity analysis by assuming errors in some of the modelling parameters. The student must be at ease with computers, programming and simulations.
The student will take one of the research codes developped in our group and apply advanced optimisation techniques to reduce CPU time. To make sure the code provides identical results after optimisations, the studend will have to prepare a battery of test cases which will be executed automatically and compared to reference solutions. The student must be at ease with computers, programming and Unix scripting.
The student will setup an automated site in which every day an update status of ocean parameters are shown. This requires an automated download of oceanographic data, its statistical analysis and finally the generation of plots and files for user download on a web-page.
