Output specifications '96 The files to be transmitted for plotting and analysis have to be written in the same way as the MODB gridded files (described in MODB gridded data matrix description and reading procedures ). For the naming convention s of the files, each file is characterized by a name and an extension. The exte nsion allows the identification of the physical fields contained in the files, w hereas the name identifies a particular realization of this fields. The extensions for the MEDMEX program are the following: ` .ETA Free sea surface elevation (meters)` ` .U West-east component of the velocity field (m/s)` ` .V South-nord component of the velocity field (m/s)` ` .W Vertical velocity, positive upwards (m/s)` ` .SAL Salinity field (psu)` ` .TEM Temperature field (Celcius)` ` .TKE Turbulent Kinetic Energy (m**2/s**2)` ```For the coarse resolution experiment, the generic names are ``` ``` crYYMM ``` where MM stands for 01, 02 .. 12 corresponding to each month of the year and YY stands for the simulated year (starting at 00) There should be thus a collection of files like ``` cr0001.TEM cr0910.SAL cr0712.ETA etc. ``` The files for the coarse resolution experiment are to be interpolated by each participant from his numerical grid on the following standard grid: Horizontally a uniform grid in decimal degrees is used: ` X=-9.5+I*0.25 ; I=1,...,184` ``` Y=30+J*0.25 ; J=1,...,63 ``` Vertically, a non uniform spacing is used. The levels to be transmitted are given in the compressed ftp-file (please remember that k=1 is near the bottom). Plotting of sections will then be done by extracting the corresponding data from these files. On the other hand, transports across the straits are to be computed by the groups in their models, since the average heat transport cannot be diagnosted from the knowledge of averaged velocity and temperature fields. Similarely, the groups will do a diagnosis of the heat and salt flux resulting from the surface relaxation. All these diagnoses will be done on a daily averaged basis and provide the following time series: diag.Q : day Qwest Qeast Qmean diag.PME : day PMEwest PMEeast PMEmean diag.TAV : day Twest Teast Tmean diag.SAV : day Swest Seast Smean diag.VTR : day Gibp Gibm Cretwp Cretwm Cretevp Cretevm Sicp Sicm Corsp Corsm Otrp Otrm Cretehp Cretehm } where all fluxes are counted positive when they are in the direction of the axis: that means positive upwards for air sea exchange. Units are W/m\$^2\$ for surface heat flux in {\tt diag.Q}, m/year for precipitation/evaporation in {\tt diag.PME}, m\$^3\$/s for volume transports across straits in {\tt diag.VTR}, Celsius and psu for mean temperature and mean salinity (in {\tt diag.TAV} and {\tt diag.SAV}). For heat and salt transport across straits, the units are Celsius m\$^3\$/s and psu m\$^3\$/s (in {\tt diag.TTR} and {\tt diag.STR} having the same structure as {\tt diag.VTR}). Fluxes and transports across straits are simply divided in a positive part (if in the direction of the axis ({\tt gibp} for exemple for the Gibraltar flux in west-east direction) and a negative part (if the flow is in the opposite direction of grid axis perpendicular to the section: {\tt Sicm } for the temperature flux in the Sicily strait in the North-South direction). {\tt *p} are thus simply the sums of the velocities times the transported quantity if the velocity if positive, and {\tt *m} are thus the sums of the parts where velocity has a minus sign. (Velocity in this context is the model component of the velocity vector along the axis which is perpendicular to the section). For the eastern Crete section, a double section along the axes is proposed t o avoid interpolation on oblique grids. ------ Creteh | Cretev   For transferring the data, make a tar file of all the files corresponding to one experiment (the coarse resolution one for the moment) and name it corresponding to your group (i.e. gher.tar, cetiis.tar, uib.tar, ua.tar, imga.tar) and finally compress it. The simply let me know where I can retrieve the files.
